What Does a Health Coach Do?

Are you feeling unmotivated to make changes in your lifestyle; or want to make changes,  but do not know how to start it? A health coach can guide you. Let me explain to you what I can do as a health coach:

  • Assist clients to achieve self-directed goals by using their strengths, resources,  and behavioral changes consistent with the client’s vision for health and well-being informed by any treatment plans prescribed by the client’s professional healthcare team.

  • Guide clients to use their strengths and resources to set goals, commit to action steps, and establish an envisioned sustainable, healthier lifestyle.

  • Empower clients through encouragement, exploration of internal strengths, and identifying and utilizing external resources to choose health-promoting behaviors that work for them.

  • Partner to help the clients navigate behavioral change and explore opportunities for growth and development

“Coaching can lead to long-term behavior change, but only because Health Coaches help clients do the meaningful work that forms a strong and mindful foundation for achieving goals” – Integrative Nutrition, NY,

What a Health Coach Does Not Do?

  • Not diagnose diseases

  • Not interpret medical data

  • Not prescribe or de-prescribe, or recommend supplements or medicines

  • Not provide nutrition consultation or create meal plans (unless they are also a certified dietitian or nutritionist, for instance)

  • Not provide exercise prescription or instruction

  • Not consult and advise or provide psychological therapeutic interventions or treatment.

When appropriate, health and wellness coaches may offer evidence-based resources or information from nationally recognized authorities. When a health coach is working under the license of a qualified medical or allied health professional (e.g., physician, psychologist, physical therapist), health and wellness coaches may support the implementation of those professionals’ treatment plans. What Integrative Nutrition Health Coaches do

  • They  focus on the relationship between food and lifestyle and how they affect health

  • They also support clients with primary food – things that nourish us off the plate, such as relationships, sleep, creativity, and joy, to optimize multidimensional health

  • They’re also uniquely positioned to bring lasting change to those living with preventable nutrition- and lifestyle-related diseases

  • They’re trained in bio-individuality, multidimensional health, and evidence-based coaching modalities  from many leading experts

  • IIN Health Coaches can also play a key role in helping clients implement doctor’s recommended preventive practices by guiding clients in meeting lifestyle goals that can help them to reduce the risk of certain lifestyle diseases.

“An Integrative Nutrition Health Coach differs from a doctor, nutritionist, registered dietitian, counselor, or consultant. But by working with other providers, they can offer more comprehensive and meaningful support than any one profession alone.”

Important:  Health and wellness coaches who hold additional, active, national, or state-recognized credentials may provide expert support and guidance within their professional scope for that credential; however, disclosure of the professional role and potential conflicts of interest must be discussed with the client and documented from the onset of a professional relationship.
